Nahia Arostegi

Nahia holds a Law Degree with Specialisation in Economics from the University of Deusto (2024) and a Master’s Degree in Port Companies Management and Maritime Law from the University of Deusto (2026). She also holds a Master’s Degree in Access to the Legal Profession and the Bar from the International University of La Rioja, UNIR (2026), and the University of Deusto’s Own Qualification, ‘Skills for International Lawyers’(2023).

It is worth noting that during her degree she spent a four-month term at Sophia University (Tokyo, Japan) as part of the Bilateral Mobility Programme (2023) in addition to taking part in the summer course organised by the Jean Monnet Chair at the University of A Coruña on the European Union’s role in the ecological and digital transition of the seas and oceans (2025). Additionally, Nahia holds the TOLES Higher (Excellent) certificate in legal English and the Certificate of Training in Insurance Distribution (Level 2) from the ICEA Association – Cooperative Research between Insurance Companies and Pension Funds (2024).

Her final-year Degree dissertation (TFG) dealt with the enforceability of jurisdiction clauses against a third-party holder of a bill of lading, and for this work she won the “Juan de Churruca Prize for Final-Year Dissertations in Law” (9th edition), which was published in the journal “Estudios de Deusto”. Her Master’s theses (TFM) deal with topics of great interest in maritime law, such as the concept of the preventive arrest of ships and the limitation of liability of the charterer vis-à-vis the shipowner

Nahia’s professional career began in London (United Kingdom) with a pupillage at Guernica 37 International Justice Chambers (2023), an international group specialising in international criminal law, human rights and transitional justice. In 2024, she contacted our firm and undertook her first undergraduate work placement at AIYON, working from its Bilbao office, before going on to combine her Master’s in Access to the Legal Profession with a role in operational and commercial management at a local financial institution. This initial contact with AIYON enabled her to familiarise herself with the way the team and its various offices work, as well as to forge close ties with the other lawyers of the firm.

During the 2025/2026 academic year, whilst studying for a Master’s degree in Maritime Law, she combined his work placement at AIYON with one in the ‘Export Customer Service’ department of the shipping company CMA CGM, based in Bilbao. This opportunity to gain entry into the shipping sector enabled her to gain first-hand insight into the operations of container shipping and to deal directly with the operators involved in the logistics chain.

In June 2026, she joined the AIYON team in Bilbao on a permanent basis as a legal adviser, having passed in July 2026 the bar exam to practise law in Spain. Since August 2026, she has been practising as a Lawyer in all types of cases handled by the firm, covering maritime law as well as land transport, trade and insurance (advice on contracts, handling of claims and arbitration proceedings under the CMR, negotiations, monitoring legal proceedings relating to maritime and land transport, etc.).
